Holy Chaos
Faith isn't easy. It doesn't make everything better.
But it gives you direction so that you can make the world better.
This matters because the world needs a lot of work right now. A. LOT. OF. WORK.
We want the Holy Spirit to move and make things "right." The problem with that is that we usually mean that we want our version of "right." We want God to turn things back to when we felt safer than we do now.
What I love about the Holy Spirit is the same thing that gives me fear and trembling: the Holy Spirit doesn't make the world safer; the Holy Spirit is explosive. The Holy Spirit brings a Holy Chaos that turns the world upside down so that God can make things Jesus' version of right (not ours).
We’re more interested in being right than living in righteousness. We worship because we want to feel better about ourselves and not because we feel better when we’re near God. We pray because we want things and forget to want to simply be with God.
My prayer on Pentecost wasn't just for a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit but a fresh outpouring of Holy Chaos that causes us to know the difference between being right and living in the chaos of righteousness.
How do we do that? How do we know the difference? Perhaps, ask ourselves these questions.
- Am I trying to convince someone that I'm right or trying to hear the deepest longings of someone's heart? When we hear someone thinks differently from us, do we jump to showing them our way or listening to why they believe what they believe?
- Do I live in all the ways that God calls us to live? In other words, "let anyone who is without sin cast the first stone." (John 8:7) No one is perfect. Don't let someone else's life cause you to not love them.
- Am I loving as God loves? Think about the time you first fell in love. It was chaotic, wasn't it? Your thoughts and emotions were all over the place. All the faults of the person seem to disappear due to the love we feel for them. I can't imagine exactly what God feels for us, but I know that the love I've received from God is immense and has made my life both chaotic and more orderly at the same time. Our goal in life should be to love like that. Because when we do, we'd be doing the work we are called to do.
So go spread some Holy Chaos today. The world needs it.
Until Everyone Hears,
-Dr K
