The Gift of Being Present: Hope
Understanding the Gift of Hope
As we prepare our hearts for the coming of Jesus, both in the celebration of Christmas and in anticipation of His second coming, we are reminded of the importance of being fully present and not letting distractions pull us away from our faith.
What is Advent?
Advent marks the beginning of the Christian liturgical year and is a time of preparation for the coming of Jesus. It is a season filled with hope, reflection, and anticipation. Advent is not just about looking back at the birth of Jesus but also looking forward to His return.
The Importance of Being Present
In today's fast-paced world, it's easy to get distracted by the busyness of life. Our spiritual journey is a lot like Christmas lights. When we first come to faith, our light shines brightly, but over time, distractions can cause our light to dim. Advent is a time to refocus and let our light shine brightly once again.
Lessons from the Gospel of Mark
Mark 13:24-37, is where Jesus speaks about the end times and the importance of staying alert and watchful. Jesus warns of false messiahs, persecution, and suffering but also offers a message of hope. By staying faithful and attentive, we can recognize the signs of His coming and remain grounded in our faith.
The Shepherd and the Sheep
Psalm 80 uses the imagery of a shepherd and his sheep. This metaphor highlights the relationship between Jesus and His followers. Just as a shepherd knows his sheep and they recognize his voice, we are called to stay close to Jesus and follow His guidance.
The Practice of Mindfulness
Centering prayer is a way to stay present with God. This practice involves focusing on a word that reminds us of God and bringing our attention back to that word whenever distractions arise. It's a way to sit in the presence of Jesus and refocus our minds and hearts.
Life Application
As we move through this Advent season, let's challenge ourselves to be fully present and attentive to the hope that Jesus brings. Here are a few questions to reflect on this week:
1. What distractions are pulling you away from your faith?
2. How can you practice being more present with God during this busy season?
3. What steps can you take to let your light shine more brightly for others to see?
Conclusion
Advent is a time of hope and preparation. By staying present and attentive, we can experience the true meaning of this season and share the hope of Jesus with those around us. Let's commit to being the light in the world and showing others that even in hard times, there is always hope.
May you go in the knowledge of God, the love of Jesus, and the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Until Everyone Hears,
