Loving Mercy at Thanksgiving
Embracing Holy Mischief: A Thanksgiving Reflection
As we gather in the spirit of Thanksgiving, we reflect on the importance of love, kindness, and mercy in our lives.
What is Holy Mischief?
Holy Mischief is the idea that God shows up in simple acts of kindness, jolting people into paying attention and seeing the divine in everyday actions. It's about doing good in unexpected ways, creating moments of joy and connection that reflect God's love.
Acts of Kindness
Kindness is a fundamental aspect of Holy Mischief. It involves doing something nice for someone without expecting anything in return. Whether it's giving a candy bar to a stranger or helping a neighbor, these small gestures can make a big difference.
The Role of Mercy
Mercy goes beyond kindness. It involves taking action to help someone in need, even when it requires personal sacrifice. Mercy breaks down barriers and transforms lives, reflecting the image of God in our actions.
The Parable of the Good Samaritan
The Parable of the Good Samaritan from Luke 10:25-37 illustrates the importance of showing mercy and love to others, regardless of their background or circumstances. When asked by a lawyer, "Who is my neighbor?" Jesus responded with the parable. A man traveling from Jerusalem to Jericho is attacked by robbers and left for dead. A priest and a Levite pass by without helping, but a Samaritan, considered an outsider, stops to care for the injured man.
Lessons from the Parable
1. **Love Goes Beyond Duty**: The priest and Levite followed the law but failed to show love. True love requires going beyond mere duty and taking risks to help others.
2. **Mercy Breaks Down Barriers**: The Samaritan's actions broke social and racial barriers, demonstrating that mercy knows no boundaries.
3. **Reflection of God's Image**: Showing mercy allows others to live abundantly, as God intended. It reflects God's love and compassion in our actions.
Challenge for the Week:
This week, challenge yourself to live a life of mercy. Look for opportunities to help those in need, even when it requires personal sacrifice. Here are a few questions to guide your reflection:
- Who in my community needs mercy? Identify someone who is struggling and think of ways you can help.
- How can I break down barriers? Consider how you can reach out to those who are different from you and show them love and compassion.
- What small acts of kindness can I perform? Look for simple ways to brighten someone's day and reflect God's love.
As we celebrate Thanksgiving, let's remember the importance of kindness and mercy in our lives. By embracing Holy Mischief, we can transform the world around us and reflect God's love in our actions. May this season be filled with opportunities to show love and compassion to others.
Let's go forth and live a life of Holy Mischief, breaking down barriers and transforming the world with acts of kindness and mercy. Happy Thanksgiving!

"God, we thank you for this day and this season of thanksgiving. We know that there are so many people in this world who do not have what we have. Help us to see them truly as you see them and be your hands and feet so that this world can be a better place. We ask all of this in Jesus' name. Amen."
