4 Ways to Practice God’s Joy

Joy

Joy In All Circumstances

One of the most important aspects of our Christian walk is learning how to have joy in all circumstances. In Philippians 4:4-7, Paul tells us that we can find joy in any situation by focusing on four things: God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, and Scripture. In this devotional, I’ll explore these four things and learn how to apply them to our lives. May God bless you as you learn to practice His joy!

Focus on joy in God

First, let's look at what it means to focus on God for our joy. In Philippians 4:4, we are told that there is "great reward" in focusing on God as our source of joy. When we focus on God, we trust His promises in the fact that He will provide us with all the things we need – including joy. We also find our hope and peace in God, and those things are essential to finding joy! I try to focus on God by taking a prayer walk or doing centering prayer by a local stream. Concentrating on God while in nature allows me to have joy for God’s creation!

Focus on Jesus

Next, let's look at focusing on Jesus. In Philippians 4:5, we are told that there is "great peace" in focusing on Christ as the source of our joy. The more we focus on Jesus, the less we will be driven by our emotions and instead focus on God's love for us. We can find lasting joy in Christ because He is always with us and will never leave us or forsake us. I focus on Jesus when I write my prayers down. It helps me to thank Jesus for my blessings and remember the sacrifice he made for me.

Focus on the Holy Spirit

After that, let's look at focusing on the Holy Spirit as a source of joy. In Philippians 4:6, we are told that there is "great strength" in focusing on the Holy Spirit as our source of joy. The Holy Spirit gives us the power to do God's work, and with that comes great joy. We find strength in knowing that God is always working through us for His glory and for our good! I can see the fruit of the Spirit when I do or see acts of #HolyMischief!

Focus on Scripture

Last, let's look at focusing on Scripture as a source of joy. In Philippians 4:7, we are told that there is "great peace" in focusing on God's Word as the source of our joy. When we focus on Scripture, we can find reassurance that God has all things under control and that He always wants what is best for us. We can find peace in the truth of God's promises, even when we face difficult circumstances.

Our joy is essential to living out our Christian walk each day, but it takes time and effort to cultivate joy in every situation. As you work on focusing your attention on God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, and Scripture, may you experience great reward, great peace, great strength, and great peace as you experience God's joy!

Prayer: Lord, we thank You for the example of Paul in Philippians 4 as he speaks about finding joy in every situation. Help us to trust Your promises and focus on You, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, and Your Word. May we experience Your great reward, peace, strength, and peace as we learn to cultivate joy in every circumstance. Amen.
