Astronomy and faith

Astronomy is different from most sciences.
It is practiced from a distance. You can see the stars, planets, comets, moons etc but you can’t do anything about them. For the most part, you can’t run experiments on them or test them out.
Sometimes we approach our faith as if we were astronomers: our faith is at a distance. It’s for the really religious people; not for me. We appreciate it but don’t experience it. We might even try to learn more about it but we don’t live it.
But faith isn’t supposed to be like astronomy. We are supposed to experience its wonder firsthand.
What if we approached our faith like a high school chemistry lab? Mixing things together. Discovering some awe. Blowing a few things up. Cleaning up our own messes. Sometimes not wanting to go but realizing the purpose once you do. Putting on safety equipment ala armor of God style. Making hypotheses. Doubting hypotheses. Accepting with humility when we are wrong. Praying that the class is graded on a curve and leaning into the joy we feel when we realize it is.
Our faith is never at a distance, unless we put it there. Engage with your faith. Live it out. It will make all the difference.
