Hide and Seek

“What makes the desert beautiful is that it hides, somewhere, a well.” – Antoine de Saint Exupery

Often one has to look beyond what we see at first in order to see what is really important. One of my favorite children’s books is The Little Prince where characters are often asked to see beyond what is presented to them and to look with their heart.

For example, what do you see in the picture above? A hat? A blob? Or a snake that has swallowed an elephant?

Jesus said to “Seek first the kingdom of God.” You know – the Kingdom of God where we can enjoy a bit of heaven on earth. Where the Divine meets the earthly and everything just seems…better?

Many of us look for that in our churches but then stop the searching there. We get excited when we experience God at church but then get disappointed to realize that there’s a lot of earthly stuff going on there too.

But if we just looked beyond our bubble(s) to see the beauty of God in other things, we might be surprised. We might just see God at work in our schools, our jobs, our homes or in the homeless, the addicted, the depressed, the stressed, the sick.

The beauty of God is clear in the abundant garden, but the beauty of God is magnified in the desert and the knowledge that it hides hope and life if we are just willing to search for it with our hearts.

Until Everyone Hears,
