New Year, New Mischief: A Guide to Holy Rascality
Let’s be honest for a second.# New Year, New Mischief: A Guide to Holy Rascality
Let’s be honest for a second. How many of your past New Year’s resolutions have fizzled out by February? The promise to hit the gym, eat better, or finally organize the garage often fades under the weight of everyday life. We start with great intentions but quickly fall back into our comfortable, predictable routines.
I’m here to suggest something different for this year. Something a little more fun. Something that has the power to not only change your year but also ripple out and change the world around you.
This January, I’m inviting you to join me in making some mischief.
Now, before you get the wrong idea, I’m not talking about causing trouble. I’m talking about a different kind of disruption. I’m talking about Holy Mischief—the act of shaking up the ordinary with unexpected bursts of joy, kindness, and grace. It’s about breaking routines, not for the sake of rebellion, but for the sake of love.
Ditching the Resolutions for a Revolution
We get so caught up in self-improvement that we can forget our faith calls us to something bigger. It calls us to look outward. What if, instead of resolving to lose ten pounds, you resolved to make ten people smile? What if, instead of vowing to be more disciplined, you vowed to be more generous with your time and spirit?
This is the essence of Holy Mischief. It’s a playful revolution against the mundane. It’s about being a delightful glitch in someone’s otherwise ordinary day. Think about it. Our world often feels heavy, and people walk through their days carrying invisible burdens. A small, unexpected act of kindness can be the very thing that lifts their spirits and reminds them they are not alone.
These acts don’t have to be grand. In fact, the beauty of mischief is that it’s often small, sneaky, and surprising.
- It’s taping a dollar bill to a vending machine with a note that says, “This one’s on me!”
- It’s paying for the coffee of the person behind you in the drive-thru.
- It’s leaving a sticky note with an encouraging message on a stranger’s car windshield.
- It’s complimenting someone in the grocery store checkout line.
These are tiny interruptions, moments of grace that break through the noise of a normal day. They are whispers of hope in a world that often shouts with negativity.
The Biblical Case for Making Good Trouble
This idea of “good trouble” isn’t new. It’s woven throughout scripture. Jesus himself was a master of Holy Mischief. He consistently challenged the status quo and disrupted the “normal” way of doing things. He ate with tax collectors, healed on the Sabbath, and told parables that turned conventional wisdom on its head. He was always shaking things up to show people a better way—a way of love, grace, and radical hospitality.
The Apostle Paul encourages us in Romans 12:2, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Making Holy Mischief is a practical way to live this out. The “pattern of this world” is often one of self-interest, routine, and looking out for number one. By choosing to be agents of unexpected kindness, we are actively refusing to conform. We are renewing our minds to focus on others and choosing to see our community through a lens of opportunity and joy.
Furthermore, we are called to be a light. In Matthew 5:16, Jesus says, “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Holy Mischief is a fantastic way to let your light shine—not in a showy, look-at-me way, but in a quiet, surprising way that points people toward something greater. The goal isn’t to get credit; it’s to spark a moment of wonder that makes someone’s day a little brighter.
Your Mission, Should You Choose to Accept It
Are you ready to stop playing it safe? Are you ready to become a holy rascal? This January, I challenge you to make some waves right here in Cartersville and Bartow County. Let’s put our faith into action and start a ripple effect of kindness.
Here’s how you can get started:
- Brainstorm Your Mischief: Think of a few small, playful acts of kindness you can do. Maybe it’s leaving a generous tip for your server or hiding an encouraging note in a library book. Keep it simple and fun.
- Look for Opportunities: As you go about your week, keep your eyes open. Who looks like they could use a smile? Where can you inject a bit of unexpected joy?
- Act Without Hesitation: The moment you see an opportunity, act on it! Don’t overthink it. The power of mischief is in its spontaneity.
- Expect Nothing in Return: The best mischief is anonymous. Do it for the joy of giving, not for the thank you.
Let’s make this new year about more than just ourselves. Let’s make it about transforming our community, one small, mischievous act at a time. Let’s confuse people with kindness and disrupt the ordinary with overwhelming grace.
