A Fist Bump and a Dose of Perspective
I found myself holding onto some words from a wise person I met over the weekend. It happened while I was serving soup. One of the men I served gave me a fist bump and shared something that hit me right where I needed it.
He told me, “You know you’re a Christian because you stop looking at your sins and start looking at God.”
He explained that God took care of our sins so we don’t have to carry them around. We don’t have to keep looking down at our mistakes. Instead, we can look up toward God. His point was simple but powerful: God loves you despite your sin, so why shouldn’t you love yourself in spite of it too?
That conversation didn’t instantly solve all my worries, but it put everything into a new light. Here was a man who didn’t know where his next meal would come from or where he would sleep that night. And there I was, caught up in my own long-range goals and anxieties. The contrast was stark. It was a wake-up call.
As I try to sort through my thoughts, I’ve decided to shift my focus. I’m going to concentrate on the goodness of God and all the blessings I have in this moment. I am going to try, really try, to put things back into God’s hands. That’s where we all belong, after all.
