Finding Your Way: A Season of Growth, Purpose, and Connection

Sometimes I feel a little lost. It’s a feeling many of us know well. The path ahead seems foggy, and the daily routine feels more like a treadmill than a journey. I spent recently on a retreat wrestling with this feeling, searching for clarity and a renewed sense of purpose. This journey taught me that finding our way isn’t about a grand, sudden revelation. It’s about taking small, intentional steps every single day.

Often, we need to rediscover what truly matters. We need to move from autopilot to active participation in our own lives. Learning to embrace discipline not as a restriction, but as a framework for freedom. I’ve found that true connection—with myself, with others, and with God—is the anchor in any storm. This isn’t just my story; it’s a map of practical ideas that can help you find more meaning, strength, and joy right where you are.

Building a Foundation of Discipline

The word “discipline” can sound intimidating. I used to think of it as a rigid set of rules. But I’ve come to see it as a powerful tool for self-care and growth. It’s about making conscious choices that align with the person you want to become and the life you want to live.

The Power of Small Habits

Change doesn’t happen overnight. It happens in the small decisions we make every day. Starting my day with a moment of quiet reflection, choosing to read a chapter of a book instead of scrolling, or committing to a short walk—these small acts built momentum.

Discipline is like building a muscle. The more you exercise it, the stronger it becomes. These small, consistent efforts create a foundation that supports you in all areas of life.

The Journey Inward: Self-Discovery and Reflection

You can’t know where you’re going if you don’t know where you are. This year, I made a commitment to turn inward and really listen. It wasn’t always comfortable, but it was incredibly revealing. Self-discovery is an ongoing conversation with yourself.

Creating Space to Listen

Our lives are noisy. To hear that still, small voice within, we have to intentionally create quiet. For me, this meant scheduling time for solitude, just as I would schedule a meeting.

This practice can take many forms:

  1. Journaling: Writing down my thoughts and feelings without judgment helped me untangle them. It revealed patterns I didn’t know existed.
  2. Prayer and Meditation: Centering myself through prayer provided a deep sense of peace and guidance. It connected me to something larger than my own worries.
  3. Mindful Moments: Simply paying attention to the present moment—the taste of my coffee, the feeling of the sun on my skin—helped ground me and reduce anxiety.

This internal work is vital. It’s how we understand our own motivations, fears, and dreams. It’s how we connect with God’s purpose for our lives.

Connecting with Others, Connecting with Purpose

While the journey starts within, it finds its fullest expression in community. My growth this year was amplified through my connections with others. We are created for fellowship, to support and be supported.

Strengthening Bonds

I learned that connection requires effort. It means being present, listening actively, and showing up for people. It means putting down the phone and looking someone in the eye.

Meaningful connection transformed my perspective. Sharing my struggles made them feel lighter. Celebrating a friend’s joy brought me joy. These moments are the fabric of a rich and purposeful life. They remind us that we are part of a larger story.

Living a Life of Service

Ultimately, I found that the clearest path to purpose is through service. When I shifted my focus from “What can I get?” to “What can I give?”, everything changed. It’s a principle at the heart of our faith.

Service connects our personal growth to the needs of the world. It’s where our faith becomes action.

Your Next Step on the Journey

My time away was a journey of rediscovery. It taught me that a fulfilling life isn’t found, it’s built—through discipline, self-reflection, and connection. It’s a continuous process of aligning our daily actions with our deepest values and God’s call on our lives. You have the power to start building that life today.

Take a moment to reflect on one small step you can take this week. How can you create a moment of quiet? How can you connect more deeply with someone in your community? What is one act of service you can offer?

I encourage you to bring this spirit of active purpose into your community life. Join in your community by exploring the volunteer opportunities. Your gifts are needed, and your participation helps us all grow stronger together. Let’s support our missions and empower our congregations, one small step at a time.

Until Everyone Hears,

Dr K
