Love. Even your enemies.

How do we love our enemies?

To answer that, let’s start in an unlikely place: the book of Judges. This Old Testament book is disturbing. It starts off by cutting off the big toes and thumbs of all the Canaanites. It goes downhill from there. It doesn’t make a good argument to love your enemies. It makes a better argument to get rid of your enemies.

But if you get rid of your enemies, who is to say that you won’t have more enemies in the future? Getting rid or running away from the enemies you know now, won’t do anything to get rid of future enemies.

What if you could get rid of all your enemies for good? No more enemies! Sounds heavenly right?

See the magical thing about loving your enemies is that they tend to stop being your enemy. They may or may not become your friend but the more you love someone, the less time and room you have to hate them.

Hate is a perpetual downward spiral. A non-life giving helix.

But love is life giving force. A force that comes from God. It reverses the spiral and when we align with God becomes a double helix.

You may not think you can do it...love your enemies. But with God you can. It won’t be easy but it will be worth it.

Matthew 5:43-48

43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor[a] and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47 And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Until Everyone Hears,

Dr. K

Loving your enemies – a double helix that takes us up, like Jacob’s ladder, towards God. Helpful metaphor!
