The Prophets and Imposter Syndrome

You are an imposter. You are doing things in a time and place and in a way that has never been possible up until this point and time. So don’t think otherwise. Don’t think you can fit in. There’s nothing to fit into. It is all new. Parts may feel familiar. Parts may use your gifting. But none of this has been done before. None.

The better question is, “How can I help?” How can you make the situation you are in right now better?

The prophets were imposters too. And most of them paid a harsh price. But they spoke the truth. 

When you think you are an imposter, perhaps you are and perhaps your prophetic voice is coming out.

The photo above from 1st Presbyterian in Atlanta depicts the prophets represented by the prophet Isaiah who throughout his prophecy told about the coming of Jesus Christ. For that reason he was picked from all the prophets to be depicted in the window. Isaiah is not facing toward the other figures in the window. He is looking toward the next window, because Isaiah prophesied more than any other person in the Old Testament, the coming of Jesus Christ.

Dr. Lyons’ son commented that Dr. Lyons (Pastor of 1st Presbyterian Atlanta when the building was constructed) had a great struggle about having Isaiah turn his back on the rest of the picture, but he could not get away from the necessity of having Isaiah face the future, particularly the Advent. 

Keep facing forward. We are all impostors and our work shapes the future.
